Abstract

Humans as social beings continually build relationships with others and their environment, producing culture that serves not only as heritage but also as a means of adaptation and self-development. Culture reflects inherited values, including the Ma'pakande Tomakula' rite in the Toraja community tradition in Napo To'bibo Hamlet, Lembang Paku, Denpina District. This rite, which literally means "feeding someone who has died but is considered alive," functions as a tribute to ancestors while also having deep social meaning for its supporting community. This study aims to explore how the Ma'pakande Tomakula' rite can be theologically interpreted through the lens of the perichoresis concept, so that this rite is no longer narrowly understood as a practice of spirit worship, but rather as an expression of communion that transcends the boundaries of life and death. Using a qualitative approach with library research, this study applies the descriptive-analytical method following Osmer's (2008) four tasks of theological interpretation: descriptive-empirical, interpretive, normative, and pragmatic tasks. The findings reveal that the Ma'pakande Tomakula' rite, originally a practice of ancestral veneration in Toraja tradition, can be reinterpreted from the perspective of Christian theology of communion. Through the perichoresis concept, this rite is no longer viewed as spirit worship but as a form of communion reflecting love, harmony, and relationships that transcend the boundaries of life and death. The perichoresis concept, which describes the unity and love within the Triune God, becomes a model for humans in building relationships with others, nature, and ancestors. This rite reveals the meaning of love that is inclusive and involves all parties, reflecting a spirituality that transcends worldly boundaries without losing the deep meaning of the identity of each party involved in the relationship. This study contributes to the development of contextual theology in Indonesia by bridging the gap between Christian theology and local Toraja culture.
