Personal Theology in Pastoral Counseling: A Narrative Approach to Facilitating Recovery and Spiritual Growth

Abstract

This study explores the integration of personal theology and the narrative approach in pastoral counseling as a transformative framework for facilitating spiritual healing and faith development. In response to the increasing complexity of psycho-spiritual challenges in contemporary church contexts, pastoral counseling requires an approach that not only addresses psychological dimensions but also engages deeply with theological reflection. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive method using a library research approach, combined with theological-reflective and narrative hermeneutical perspectives. The findings indicate that personal theology, understood as an individual’s reflective faith shaped by lived experience, provides a meaningful theological framework for interpreting life struggles. Meanwhile, the narrative approach enables individuals to reconstruct their life stories, allowing new meanings to emerge through the integration of personal experiences with the broader narrative of the Christian faith. The integration of these two approaches fosters a holistic counseling process that facilitates inner healing, reconstructs spiritual identity, and promotes deeper faith growth. This study contributes to the development of pastoral counseling by offering an integrative model that bridges theological reflection and narrative practice within the context of contemporary ministry.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji integrasi antara teologi pribadi dan pendekatan naratif dalam konseling pastoral sebagai kerangka transformatif untuk memfasilitasi pemulihan rohani dan pertumbuhan iman. Dalam menghadapi kompleksitas persoalan psiko-spiritual dalam konteks pelayanan gereja masa kini, konseling pastoral memerlukan pendekatan yang tidak hanya bersifat psikologis, tetapi juga mendalam secara teologis. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif-deskriptif melalui studi pustaka, dengan pendekatan teologis-reflektif dan hermeneutik naratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teologi pribadi, sebagai refleksi iman yang terbentuk dari pengalaman hidup individu, memberikan kerangka teologis yang bermakna dalam menafsirkan pergumulan hidup. Sementara itu, pendekatan naratif memungkinkan individu untuk merekonstruksi cerita hidupnya sehingga menghasilkan makna baru melalui integrasi pengalaman pribadi dengan narasi iman Kristen. Integrasi kedua pendekatan ini menghasilkan proses konseling yang holistik, yang tidak hanya memfasilitasi pemulihan batin, tetapi juga membentuk ulang identitas rohani dan mendorong pertumbuhan iman yang lebih mendalam. Penelitian ini berkontribusi dalam pengembangan konseling pastoral melalui model integratif yang menjembatani refleksi teologis dan praktik naratif dalam konteks pelayanan gereja kontemporer.
