Abstract

This study aims to examine the theological meaning of dreams and their implications for the life of the Lempo Berurung congregation within the framework of Christian faith. Among the congregation, dreams are often understood as a medium of communication with ancestors or as signs that influence life decisions. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method, incorporating interviews, observations, and literature review. The findings reveal a significant difference in understanding between congregation members and church leaders. Congregants tend to interpret dreams in a spiritual and practical manner, while church leaders emphasize a more critical and theological perspective. The belief that dreams serve as a medium of communication with the deceased remains strong and may lead to syncretistic practices. Furthermore, the limited theological teaching within the church contributes to these interpretations. From a theological perspective, dreams cannot be regarded as a primary source of authority in Christian faith, as the normative revelation of God is found in Scripture. Therefore, an approach is needed to place dreams proportionally within the life of faith. The main contribution of this study is the development of a “theological discernment of dreams” model, consisting of three stages: identification, evaluation, and faithful response. This model provides a practical framework for churches to guide congregants in interpreting dreams critically, contextually, and biblically. Thus, this study contributes to the development of contextual theology that remains relevant to local culture while maintaining the integrity of Christian doctrine.
