Abstract

Persons with disabilities in Indonesia—numbering more than 23 million or approximately 9 percent of the population—continue to face marginalization in the pastoral care of churches. The dominant pastoral models tend to be charitable and curative in nature, unconsciously positioning persons with disabilities as passive objects of ministry rather than active pastoral agents. This article argues that the spirituality of suffering—centered on the theology of the cross—can serve as a theological foundation for liberative and inclusive pastoral care. Employing library research and analogical hermeneutics, this study engages the theology of the cross (Moltmann, Luther) in dialogue with disability theology (Eiesland, Reynolds, Creamer, Swinton). The main findings indicate that: (1) suffering is not a sign of curse or imperfection but the very locus of encounter with the suffering God (theopathic God); (2) the risen Christ who retains His wounded body (John 20:27) affirms that disability does not contradict the image of God (imago Dei); and (3) the church is called to become a "vulnerable communion"—a community where weakness is honored and every member, without exception, is recognized as indispensable (1 Corinthians 12:22-25). Based on this foundation, the article formulates three principles of inclusive pastoral care: recognition of the dignity of the sufferer, solidarity that replaces pity, and shared vulnerability as the identity of the church. Practical implementation includes the formation of pastoral attitudes and competencies, the creation of safe and accessible church environments, and the empowerment of families of persons with disabilities. The spirituality of suffering does not offer the elimination of suffering but rather presence, honor, and pastoral justice for all.
