Abstract

Genesis 2:16-17 is a central text in creation theology that contains God's command to the first humans accompanied by the threat of death. The primary problem that emerges is the striking narrative tension between the text's wording ("in the day that you eat, you shall surely die") and the reality in Genesis 3 that Adam and Eve did not experience physical death on that same day. This study aims to bridge the gap between command and reality by analyzing how the text functions as a unified narrative whole. Using a qualitative method with a library research approach and close reading analysis developed by Robert Alter and Meir Sternberg, this study focuses on patterns, irony, ambiguity, and interrelationships between parts of the text in Genesis 2-3. The findings indicate that the tension between command and reality is a narrative irony intentionally constructed by the Yahwist author. A close reading of Genesis 3:7-10 reveals that although humans did not die physically, a fundamental change occurred in their relationship with God: the emergence of fear (yir'ah), shame (bosh), and the act of hiding (chaba') from the presence of the Lord—something absent in Genesis 2:25. The original contributions of this study are (1) applying the close reading method, which is rarely used in studies of Genesis 2:16-17 in Indonesia, to uncover narrative irony that has often been overlooked, and (2) offering a reading that unites Genesis 2 and 3 as a single coherent story, not as two separate or contradictory parts.
