Abstract

This article explores musical phenomena in the thought of Jeremy S. Begbie as a constructive framework for interpreting Trinitarian theology. Using an arts-based theological inquiry approach and qualitative conceptual analysis, this study examines how chord, resonance, and perichoretic musical relations function as analogical resources for understanding divine relationality. Rather than treating music merely as aesthetic illustration, the article argues that musical structures offer an imaginative and theological grammar for rethinking unity and distinction within the Trinity. The findings show that chordal harmony provides a model of unity-in-difference, while resonance deepens this perspective by illuminating mutual indwelling and dynamic communion associated with perichoresis. In dialogue with relational Trinitarian theologians and contemporary discussions on music and religious experience, the study demonstrates that Begbie’s theology of music extends beyond metaphor toward a richer theological imagination. At the same time, the article critically acknowledges the limits of musical analogy, emphasizing its heuristic and interpretive rather than ontological function. The study argues that musical phenomena can serve as a productive interdisciplinary locus for theological reflection, contributing to contemporary conversations between theology, aesthetics, and doctrine. By bringing music into dialogue with Trinitarian thought, this article offers a renewed perspective on how artistic phenomena may enrich systematic theology and expand reflection on relational understandings of God.
