Abstract

This research is based on the low initial reading ability of students, where most students are not able to read fluently and still had difficulty in recognizing letters, arranging syllables, and often read and spelled haltingly. Additionally, there was a lack of varied learning methods used in the classroom. Based on these problems, the purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the phonics learning method on the early reading ability of first-grade students at SDN 14 Sitiung. This research is a quantitative research approach though experimental method. The research design employed is a pre-experimental design in the form of a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The subjects of the study 16 students of the first-grade class. The research was conducted in the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The instrument used was an early reading test developed based on an assessment rubric. Data collection techniques were carried out through pretest and posttest. Data analysis was performed using normality tests and hypothesis testing through the paired sample t-test, which resulted in a significance value of 0.000. According to the hypothesis testing criteria, since 0.000 < 0.05, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the phonics learning method has a positive and significant effect on the early reading ability of first-grade students at SDN 14 Sitiung.
