Church Custodians in the Theology of Ministry: Integrating Biblical Exegesis of Numbers 3:21–37 with Contemporary Church Practice

Abstract

This study aims to examine the theological role of church custodians (koster) in ecclesial ministry based on Numbers 3:21–37. Traditionally, custodians are often perceived as technical workers responsible for operational aspects of worship, resulting in limited attention within theological discourse. This research employs a qualitative approach using an integrative method that combines biblical exegesis and empirical analysis through interviews with 17 informants, including custodians, church elders, and congregants. A historical-grammatical exegetical approach is applied to interpret Numbers 3:21–37, particularly the Levitical service concepts reflected in the Hebrew terms mishmeret, shamar, and qodesh. The findings reveal that maintenance-related service in the Levitical context carries a theological dimension as a sacred responsibility in preserving the holiness and order of worship. Empirical data further indicate that custodians perform their duties with strong spiritual awareness and faith commitment. However, congregational perceptions still tend to reduce their role to mere technical functions. This study proposes a theological reconstruction that positions custodians as a contemporary representation of Levitical service within the church. Consequently, this research contributes to the development of a more inclusive theology of ministry by integrating biblical text, ecclesial practice, and theological reflection.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji secara teologis peran koster dalam pelayanan gereja berdasarkan Bilangan 3:21–37. Selama ini, koster umumnya dipahami sebagai pelayan teknis yang bertanggung jawab atas aspek operasional ibadah, sehingga kurang mendapat perhatian dalam kajian teologi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode integratif yang menggabungkan eksegesis biblika dan analisis empiris melalui wawancara terhadap 17 informan yang terdiri dari koster, majelis, dan jemaat. Pendekatan eksegesis historis-gramatikal digunakan untuk menafsirkan teks Bilangan 3:21–37, khususnya konsep pelayanan Lewi yang tercermin dalam istilah Ibrani mishmeret, shamar, dan qodesh. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pelayanan pemeliharaan dalam konteks Lewitik memiliki dimensi teologis sebagai tanggung jawab sakral dalam menjaga kekudusan dan keteraturan ibadah. Temuan empiris juga mengungkap bahwa koster menjalankan tugasnya dengan kesadaran iman dan komitmen spiritual yang kuat. Namun demikian, persepsi jemaat masih cenderung mereduksi peran koster sebagai pekerja teknis. Penelitian ini menawarkan rekonstruksi teologis yang memposisikan koster sebagai representasi pelayanan Lewitik dalam konteks gereja kontemporer. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini berkontribusi dalam mengembangkan teologi pelayanan yang lebih inklusif dengan mengintegrasikan teks biblika, praktik pelayanan, dan refleksi teologis.
